Detrital zircon U–Pb–Hf data from Cambrian sandstones of the Ougarta Mountains Algeria: Implication for palaeoenvironment

We report new detrital zircon U-Pb ages and Hf isotopic signatures of detrital zircons in Cambrian sedimentary rocks from the Ougarta Mountains of Algeria in the West African Craton (WAC) in order to provide constraints on the palaeo-catchments of the Early Palaeozoic river systems draining Gondwana. The Cambrian sedimentary samples from the Ougarta Mountains have near-identical age spectra with a dominant age peak at 618 Ma and an additional age peak at 2,035 Ma. The oldest detrital zircon grain is 3,407 Ma. The εHf (t) values of the 618 Ma age peak spans from εHf (t) +12 to −25 with a dominant mode at −1; the εHf (t) of the Palaeoproterozoic zircon ranges from 6 to −27 with an average of −10; the pre-2,300 Ma zircon Hf lie along a crustal evolution trajectory (176 Lu/ 177 Hf = 0.01) back to the depleted mantle at 3,100 Ma. The maximum depositional age of the sandstones in the Sebkhet el Melah Formation is constrained by the youngest detrital zircon age of 559 ± 13 Ma and by the underlying volcaniclastic rocks dated at 555 ± 7 Ma (Late Ediacaran to the Early Cambrian). The 618 and 2,035 Ma age peaks are consistent with a proximal provenance from the WAC, and it is possible that recycling of eroded material from the Cadomian arc and Pan-African rocks may have been a potential source of the Ediacaran detrital zircons analysed herein. There were four (0.9%) Stenian detrital zircons identified in this study, and our results are consistent with the lack of WAC Stenian detrital zircon noted in previous studies, except those reported from a single Middle Cambrian sample in Morocco. Correlative sedimentary successions further to the east contain ubiquitous ca. 1.0 Ga detrital zircon that was likely supplied from the Trans-Gondwana Mountain chain. It is noteworthy that the WAC and Sahara Metacraton are surrounded on three sides by Neoproterozoic orogenic systems, with the Rokelide, Dahomeyide, Pharuside, Anti-Atlas, and Brasiliano orogens (reconstructed position from Gondwana palaeogeography) around the WAC and the Dahomeyide, Pharuside, East African orogen, and Oubangides orogens around the Sahara Metacraton. We posit these orogenic belts acted as drainage divides that controlled sediment routing pathways. Additionally, the occurrence of Stenian detrital zircon in Morocco could be explained by longshore drift coming from the east (present-day coordinates).

The complex history of assemblage and disruption of continental plates surrounding the Atlantic Ocean is in part recorded by the distribution of detrital zircon ages entrained in continental sedimentary strata from Morocco (Central High Atlas and Argana basins) and Canada (Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick). Here we investigate detrital zircon from the latest Triassic (ca. 202 Ma) sedimentary strata directly underlying lava flows of the Central Atlantic magmatic province or interlayered within them. SHRIMP (Sensitive High-Resolution Ion Microprobe) and LA-ICP-MS (Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry) U-Pb ages for zircon range from Paleozoic to Archean with a dominant Neoproterozoic peak, and significant amounts of ca. 2 Ga zircon. These ages suggest a prevailing West African (Gondwanan) provenance at all sampling sites. Notably, the Paleoproterozoic zircon population is particularly abundant in central Morocco, north of the High Atlas chain, suggesting the presence of Eburnean-aged rocks in this part of the country, which is consistent with recent geochronologic data from outcropping rocks. Minor amounts of late Mesoproterozoic and early Neoproterozoic zircon (ca. 1.1-0.9 Ga) in Moroccan samples are more difficult to interpret. A provenance from Avalonia or Amazonia, as proposed by previous studies is not supported by the age distributions observed here. An involvement of more distal source regions, possibly located in northeastern Africa (Arabian Nubian Shield) would instead be possible. Paleozoic zircon ages are abundant in the Canadian sample, pointing to a significant contribution from Hercynian aged source rocks. Such a signal is nearly absent in the Moroccan samples, suggesting that zircon-bearing Hercynian granitic rocks of the Moroccan Meseta block were not yet outcropping at ca. 200

The Late Paleozoic sedimentary basins in the Northern Gemericum evolved gradually in time and space within the collisional tectonic regime of the Western Carpathian Variscan orogenic belt. The detrital zircon age spectra, obtained from the Mississippian, Pennsylvanian and Permian metasediments, have distinctive age distribution patterns that reflect the tectonic setting of the host sediments. An expressive unimodal zircon distribution, with an age peak at 352 Ma, is shown by the basal Mississippian metasediments. These represent a relic of the convergent trench-slope sedimentary basin fill. In comparison, the Pennsylvanian detrital zircon populations display distinct multimodal distributions, with the main age peaks at 351, 450, 565 Ma and smaller peaks at ~2.0 and ~2.7 Ga. This is consistent with derivation of clastic detritus from the collisional suture into the foreland basin. Similarly, the Permian sedimentary formations exhibit the multimodal distribution of zircon ages, with main peaks at 300, 355 and 475 Ma. The main difference, in comparison with the Pennsylvanian detrital zircon assemblages, is the sporadic occurrence of the Kasimovian– Asselian (306–294 Ma), as well as the Artinskian–Kungurian (280–276 Ma) igneous zircons. The youngest magmatic zircon ages nearly correspond to the syn-sedimentary volcanic activity with the depositional age of the Permian host sediments and clearly indicate the extensional, rift-related setting.
