History of the systematics of theSesamia sensulato group of African noctuid stem borers of monocotyledonous plants (Lepidoptera)

Abstract: Abstract. From the description of the genus Sesamia Guenée in 1852 to the latest work on the African species, the history of the systematics of this diffi cult group of African noctuid stem borers is recounted. The misidentifi cations that confused the taxonomy of these taxa and the new light shed when genitalia observation was fi rst used are described. Some diffi culties that still remain in classifying the 157 species described to date are emphasised and possible improvement by the combined use of morpholog… Show more

“…This group was recently given the status of a subtribe of Apameini, under the name Sesamiina (Zilli et al , 2005). The subtribe includes 158 species in Africa, distributed in 11 genera (Moyal, 2006; Moyal & Le Ru, 2006). Several genera include major pests of cereals, particularly Sesamia Guenée and Busseola Thurau.…”

“…Therefore, the present study aims at re-analysing the stemborer and parasitoid species composition on maize and wild host plants in the humid forest zone and the WH of Cameroon relying on the taxonomic expertise of specialists at the Institut de Recherche pour le De´veloppment (IRD, France). “…Studying borer populations in natural landscapes requires the identifi cation of species, which may be diffi cult, particularly in noctuid borers, because of the great morphological similarity between species and some intra-specifi c variability (Tams & Bowden 1953;Holloway 1998). So the combined use of morphological and molecular data has been promoted as a powerful tool to get a better insight into the taxonomic relationships in noctuid stem borers (Moyal 2006). Molecular studies can furthermore reveal the recent history of taxa.…”
