History of the Emergence and Spatiotemporal Spread of Tobacco Mosaic Virus in China

Abstract: The ongoing spread of Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) throughout China threatens and diminishes proceeds from production of tobacco and other crops. Determining how and when TMV first emerged in China, its current evolutionary rate, diffusion pathways, spatial and plant host distributions, can help minimize the risk associated with mosaic disease (MD). Here, 110 TMV Coat Protein (CP) gene sequences sampled from 12 distinct plant hosts between 1997 and 2015 from 18 geographical locations within China (14 Provinces, … Show more

“…Due to the huge impact of viral diseases on the final crop yield, especially TSWV resulting in heavy qualitative and quantitative losses, and the importance of tobacco as a cash crop, this study was focused to assess and identify the prevalence and population dynamics of TSWV in tobacco crops in China on a larger scale. For this purpose, full-length genome sequences of ten TSWV isolates from tobacco were analyzed from different regions including Hunan, Shandong, Shanxi, Sichuan, and Yunnan provinces; well known to have a major contribution to tobacco production in China [ 25 ].…”
