History of Sunlight Exposure Is a Risk Factor for Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Abstract: Sunlight exposure during working life is an important risk factor for AMD, whereas sunlight exposure after retirement seems to have less influence on the disease development. Therefore, preventive measures, for example, wearing sunglasses to minimize sunlight exposure, should start early to prevent development of AMD later in life.

“…The solar exposure, presumably due to ultraviolet rays, may interfere in AMD development. A similar prevalence of European inhabitants could be inferred for the Brazil's south region and (around 8 to 27%) and similar to central America in north region (4,9,(23)(24)(25)(26)(27) . A mean age of 73 years for AMD patients was found.…”

“…Although epidemiological evidence of an association between sunlight exposure and AMD has been inconsistent over the years (48)(49)(50), recent studies have provided supported for such a link (51)(52)(53). The adverse consequences of lipofuscin bisretinoid photodegradation could be a pathway that explains this relationship.…”

“…The pathogenesis of AMD, which is the main cause of blindness in the adult population of the developed countries, is complex and multifactorial, involving various genetic loci and environmental factors. There is considerable evidence in the literature that the OS is an important factor in the disease process . For instance, a recent study on a large cohort of participants evaluated the effects of current and past sunlight exposure, as well as the iris color on early and late AMD.…”

For instance, a recent study on a large cohort of participants evaluated the effects of current and past sunlight exposure, as well as the iris color on early and late AMD. They investigated the amount of self‐reported sun exposure the participants had in their past and more currently.…”
