Physicians’ Health-Related Quality of Life and Its Associated Factors During COVID-19 Pandemic in Jordan: A Cross-Sectional Study

Healthcare workers worldwide have been exposed to extraordinary stress during COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to investigate health-related quality of life (HRQoL) level and its health and occupational associated factors among Jordanian physicians during COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional design using an online survey was adopted targeting physicians at different Jordanian hospitals. The study survey included demographics, HRQoL measured by 12-item Short Form health survey (SF-12) mental and physical components, physicians’ evaluation of work conditions during COVID-19, Neck Disability Index (NDI), Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS 21), and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Descriptive analyses were conducted to summarize primary data. Factors associated with HRQoL were determined using a multiple variable regression analysis. In total, 326 physicians successfully completed the survey, 44.2% were males with mean age of 32.08 (±6.93). SF-12 mental component mean was 52.13 (±20.84) and physical component mean was 69.24 (±18.1). Physicians HRQoL level was significantly associated with levels of stress (β = −0.23, 95% CI −1.05 to −0.27), depression (β = −0.22, 95% CI −1.09 to −0.28), neck disability (β = −0.30, 95% CI −1.08 to −0.57), health self-evaluation (β = 0.14, 95% CI 1.66–7.87), sleep self-evaluation (β = 0.09, 95% CI 0.16–3.58), and physical activity level (β = 0.09, 95% CI 0.00–0.001). Jordanian physicians’ level of HRQoL was relatively low during COVID-19. Healthcare facilities administrators should take into consideration factors associated with physicians’ HRQoL level when planning for future healthcare emergencies.

BACKGROUND:Both the contribution of the Arab World in the history of neurosurgery (NS) and its recent development are not known to neurosurgeons worldwide. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS:The aim is to give the reader an overview of the history of NS in the Arab World, its development over the last decades and the Moroccan contribution to this development. RESULTS:The first scientific roots for the practice of NS were born in the Middle East. Trephination, has been practiced for thousands of years before Christ (B. C.), by Assyrians, Babylonians and Pharaohs' physicians. The oldest medical manuscripts are the Cuneiform Medical Tablets found in Mesopotamia, and Edwin Smith's Surgical Papyrus in Egypt. These first steps would become confirmed during the Middle Ages through the influence of Arab and Islamic civilization. Modern NS was introduced into the Arab World by general surgeons of the colonial medical diaspora during the first half of the last century. Thanks to the effort of the pioneers, the number of neurosurgeons would increase over a limited period of time to reach an honorable number and ratio of 3313 and 1: 128530, respectively). Today, all Arab neurosurgeons have a national society of neurosurgery and are gathered in the Pan Arab Neurosurgical Society (PANS) which publish an official journal, the Pan Arab Journal of Neurosurgery (PAJN). The Moroccan Society of NS have made a significant contribution in the recent evolution of Arab NS and its international recognition when organizing the first World Congress of Neurosurgery (Marrakech, 2005) and initiating the first regional training program for young neurosurgeons in 2002. CONCLUSION:The neurosurgeons from the Arab world should be proud of their immense contribution to the history of medicine and NS. Even though the introduction of modern NS has been delayed in the majority of Arab countries, the devotion and sacrifice of the pioneers have enabled them to make for the lost time over a short period of time. This has enabled Arab neurosurgeons to meet the needs of the population in their respective countries.

Background: Individuals with chronic vision diseases need regular ophthalmic follow-up. However, access to non-urgent ophthalmic services was limited in areas of strict lockdown during SARS-COV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic. This article aimed to o assess Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and its predictors in individuals with chronic vision conditions during COVID-19 lockdown. Methods: A cross-sectional, survey-based study targeted Jordanians adults with variety of chronic vision conditions require regular ophthalmic follow-up. Outcome measures included HRQoL measured by 12-item Short Form health survey (SF-12), mental health symptoms measured by Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS 21), vision ability measured by the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (VFQ-25) General Vision and Role Limitation subscales. Data were analyzed descriptively and using a multiple variable linear regression to identify HRQoL predictors. Results: A total of 201 participants completed the study with a mean age of 52.09 (±15.41) years and SF-12 mean score of 57.90 (±18.15). Level of HRQoL was significantly and negatively predicted by VFQ-25 Role Limitation subscale, presence of diabetes, the need of ophthalmic follow-up during lockdown, and stress. The regression model explained 47.1% of the variance in HRQoL (r2=0.471, F=35.57, P<0.001).Conclusions: Jordanian individuals with chronic vision conditions requiring non-urgent ophthalmic follow-up demonstrated a relatively low level of HRQoL during COVID-19 lockdown. Participants also showed adverse impact on mental health and reported low accessibility to ophthalmic care. Access to non-urgent ophthalmic care in individuals with chronic vision diseases should be carefully considered by healthcare administrations and policymakers for optimal service planning during pandemics and crises.
