History of autologous platelet‐rich plasma: A short review

Abstract: Background Platelet‐rich plasma (PRP) is a medical material with numerous applications. It produces particularly spectacular effects when applied in cosmetic dermatology. Aim To illustrate the origin of the treatment. Conclusion The therapy originates from transfusiology, where it is applied as a concentrate of platelets to treat trombocytopenia. PRP treatment is 70 years old and has an increasing number of applications. PRP holds particular promise for cosmetic dermatology.

“…The origin of the therapy comes from transfusiology, where platelet concentrates are used to treat thrombocytopenia. 1 In 1954, for the first time, the term "platelet-rich-plasma" (PRP) was employed by Kingsley 2 (1954), when referring to platelet concentrates for transfusion. The first clinical demonstration that autologous platelet concentrates promoted healing when used locally was reported by Knighton, et al 3 (1986).…”

“…A review of the literature shows that the history of various PRP-based therapies is at least 70 years old. For this reason, it is widely accepted that the method is sufficiently well-established to allow widespread use in medicine, particularly in sports medicine, and orthopedics [114]. The use of PRP in the process of plasmapheresis in enhancing bone regeneration was described in 1999 by Anitua [115,116].…”

“…In sum, PRP is an autologous orthobiologic treatment option for musculoskeletal conditions with favorable results in a limited number of high-quality clinical trials. PRP therapy is currently used to treat degenerative disorders and promote the healing of tendons, ligaments, muscles, and cartilage [114].…”

“…Platelet-rich plasma is synonymous with plateletrich growth factors, platelet-rich fibrin matrix, and platelet concentrate and is used in the treatment of thrombocytopenia [22]. The extensive use of PRP for platelet transfusion in the treatment of thrombocytopenia resulted in an improvement in the platelet concentrate preparation techniques [24].…”
