History, epidemiology and diagnostics of dengue in the American and Brazilian contexts: a review

Abstract: Dengue virus (DENV), an arbovirus transmitted by mosquitoes, has become a major threat to American human life, reaching approximately 23 million cases from 1980 to 2017. Brazil is among the countries most affected by this terrible viral disease, with 13.6 million cases. DENV has four different serotypes, DENV1-4, which show a broad clinical spectrum. Dengue creates a staggering epidemiological and economic burden for endemic countries. Without a specific therapy and with a commercial vaccine that presents some… Show more

“…In 2013, the number of dengue cases in Brazil were estimated in more than 1.4 million, with an economic impact of approximately USD 300 million (about BRL 600 million at the time) 14,15 . The Southeast Region has the highest population among Brazil's five Regions, and also consistently shows the highest number of dengue cases [15][16][17] . Contrarily, the incidence rates in southern Brazil are consistently low when compared to other regions, especially the Central-West Region, which presents the highest incidence of dengue infection per capita [15][16][17] .…”

“…For rapid and accurate diagnosis of dengue virus in early phases of acute infections, detection of DENV RNA is recommended as the most sensitive and specific method to diagnose dengue in the acute phase of the illness by WHO [9]. After the first developed nucleic acid detection test for dengue diagnosis over 20 years ago [15], there have been a number of RT-PCR assays for DENV detection and serotype identification with high sensitivity and specificity [16][17][18][19][20]. Combined with automated RNA extraction protocols, RT-PCR can potentially facilitate fast and accurate diagnosis of dengue suspected cases with a single sample obtained during the patient's first visit to the clinician.…”

“…De maneira específica, nos últimos 50 anos, junto com o aumento da expansão geográfica, a incidência dessa doença aumentou aproximadamente 30 vezes. Além disso, ocorrem anualmente cerca de 390 milhões de infecções por dengue, sendo que 96 milhões dos indivíduos acometidos apresentam manifestações clínicas 1,2 .…”
