It opens with a brief depiction of the two major approaches to the field (through connexions and comparisons) and moves on to survey first European and then other historiographical traditions in writing ‘centric’ histories up to the times of the Imperial Meridian 1783–1825, when Europe’s geopolitical power over all other parts of the world became hegemonic. Thereafter, and for the past two centuries, all historiographic… Show more

“…The lack of implementation or enforcement of international legal instruments has often been blamed on the adverse nature of local cultures (Zwari, 2012). As indicated hereinbefore, traditional views often conflict with modern imperatives (O'Brien, 2006). Hence in a wider ambit, the complex cultural context of Nigeria does not often permit the straightforward implementation or enforcement of international legal instruments especially those related to human rights.…”

At that conference, Cahen made quite a splash with a speech denigrating the amateurism of Islamic studies "produced by imperialists, colonialists, and missionaries [and] their excessive preoccupation with the 2) As Patrick O'Brien (2006) argues so brilliantly, it would take the dreadful destruction of two world wars in the twentieth century for the majority of historians based in EuroAmerica to realize alternatives of writing history within the narrow focus of the nation-state, and to entertain the possibilities of researching the human condition from the perspective of multi-global influences. affairs of sultans, scholars, and great artists."…”
