Historico-geographical approach in the study of urban form: roots, development and reflections in the study of Mersin, Turkey

Abstract: This study focuses on the emergence and development of historico-geographical approach that is systematized by M.R.G. Conzen in the mid-twentieth century through his studies of English cities. The background of historico-geographical approach was discussed in a detailed way. And the ideas of M.R.G. Conzen was examined in many early and recent studies. This study aims to identify the philosophical background of historico-geographical approach throughout its historical development and seeks to answer whether it … Show more

“…Morphogenetic method, the conceptualization of historical development, terminological precision and cartographic representation are the main characteristics of the approach (Conzen, 1960;Ünlü, 2021;Whitehand, 1977Whitehand, , 1981Whitehand, , 1992aWhitehand, , 1992bWhitehand, , 2001Whitehand, , 2016. Solid evidence of the approach can be found in the work of M.R.G.…”

“…Originally, morphologiwccal studies were initially not part of mainstream urban design studies but rather associated with the field of ecology and biological studies. Goethe, one of the pioneering scholars on morphology, researched the dynamic interrelation between structures within organisms rather than looking at their static nature (Ünlü, 2021). For Kropf, morphologically, one can see a city as a living organism consisting of primary elements.…”

“…From this perspective, adaptive cycles are a well‐known subject studied by urban morphologists. The variation of building coverage at the plot level (the burgage cycle, Conzen 1960; Feliciotti 2018; Ünlü 2021) or the development cycles highlighted by Caniggia and Maffei (1979) at the settlement level, are good examples of studies on the evolution of urban landscapes in urban morphology. As cities adapt to new needs and challenges, their forms change.…”

“…Increasing densities associated with an increase in building coverage as well as the use of vacant lots for urban agriculture patterns with decreasing densities are both adaptation dynamics. Good examples of urban adaptation are the piecemeal urban intensification patterns coupling infill development and building substitutions, like the one studied by Ünlü (2021) in Mersin, Turkey, where whole districts of single‐family houses on large plots became dense alignments of multistory buildings within the same street system.…”
