As cities transition from incremental development to stock development, university campuses in suburban areas are progressively becoming urban university campuses. The stability of the boundary between urban university campuses and the city, along with the fact that the campus’s overall spatial capacity is reaching its maximum, makes it impossible for urban university campuses to have future spatial expansions. This article focused on the stock development, renewal, and transformation of urban campuses. From the perspective of urban university campus block morphology hierarchy and using the Wushan Campus of South China University of Technology in Guangzhou as an example, this study utilized urban morphology theory, data mining technology, big data collection, and visualization techniques to measure campus block morphology. Then, K-means clustering was utilized to classify the block form, and historical background research was employed to study the many forms of typical block form. Finally, the campus renewal and transformation guiding principles were introduced, and the control index of block form renewal and transformation was formed, evolving into the university campus block form renewal and transformation design technique. This strategy was used to investigate the general revitalization of college campuses.

There are many historic city centers that were once the centers of cities that face challenges in maintaining their centrality. This results in the loss of their ability to attract economic activities and people, leading to the abandonment of historically valuable architecture and decreased pedestrian traffic.This research examines the process of transformation of urban centrality in cities through the theory of urban centrality. It identifies the factors influential in preserving centrality of cities, which affects the preservation of valuable vernacular architecture.It employs a case study approach as a research method, and focuses on the old town district of Sakon Nakhon city. Space syntax methods are deployed to ascertain the spatial relations.The findings reveal that there are two significant factors contributing to the preservation of centrality in the old town. The first is the urban grid configuration, which influences the creation of natural movement patterns at both the city and local levels. The second is the local street network integrated into the global street network.Both factors have an impact on the liveliness of the city and the preservation of valuable vernacular architecture, benefiting from increased pedestrian movements resulting from the maintenance of city centrality.

Many studies have been conducted to measure the experiential qualities of historical streets using the standards and principles released by many global organizations. However, little attention has been paid to the effect of spatial characteristics of historical heritage. This study proposes a space syntax-based methodology, first developed by Bill Hillier and Julienne Hanson with colleagues from the Bartlett School of Architecture, while introducing factors such as complexity, coherence, ‘mystery’, and legibility from the work of environmental psychologist Stephen Kaplan and the urban designer Gordon Cullen. Our intention is to help inform urban designers in understanding people’s spatial cognition of historical streets, and thereby assist designers and managers in identifying where cognitive experiences can be improved. The proposed method is applied to Nanxun, which is a developed canal town currently in decline in Zhejiang Province, China. This will be treated as the case study in order to explore the implication of the space syntax analysis. The impact from spatial characteristics on the evaluation is indirect and largely determined by the road-network of the canal town. As for Nanxun, the findings of this research suggest that the government’s priority is to solve current negative tourist perception based on a conservation restoration plan. The findings of this research provide a reference for policymakers to better understand the experiential qualities of historical streets in townscapes.
