Historical Analysis of the Example of Nowy Sącz in Space Syntax Perspective. Guidelines for Future Development of Urban Matrix in Medium-Sized Cities

Abstract: This paper presents the development of the public space of Nowy Sącz, taking into account the space syntax analysis of the historical maps of the city and the structure of its development. Nowy Sącz is a city located in southern Poland, with over 80,000 residents. A space syntax analysis of historical maps helps to explain the urban space’s growth and development structure. The scientific goal of this paper was to build model solutions and urban typologies of Nowy Sącz; to present the logic of the model; and t… Show more

“…Secondly, historical districts could benefit from space syntax. It also attempts to describe and study a wide range of spatial layouts, as well as to help understand the relationship between human behaviors and spatial characteristics on ancient streets [24,25]. The City Form Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) developed the Urban Network Analysis approach in 2012, along with an ArcGIS plug-in for the overlay analysis of blocks and building elements [26].…”

“…This theory provides practical possibilities and measurable results (Karimi, 2012;Hillier & Hanson, 1984). For example, space syntax analysis has been used to study spatial factors in the formation of urban centers in Suzhou, China (Dai, 2004), and to analyze historical maps to understand the growth and development structure of urban spaces in cities in southern Poland (Suchoń & Olesiak, 2021). It has also been employed to investigate the correlation between the arrangement of street networks and density of movements in historic urban cores on the AlKarkh area in Baghdad, Iraq (Albabely & Alobaydi, 2023).…”

“…Space syntax could be applied on historical districts. It also aims to represent and analyze a large range of spatial layouts and to assist in explaining the relation between human behaviors and space characteristics on historical streets [22]. The major contribution of the combination of space syntax analysis and geographic information system lies in improving the efficiency of expressing the competence of space [23][24][25].…”
