Histopathology of Trypanorhyncha plerocercoids (Cestodes) in some Marine Fish from Waters of the Arabian Gulf

Abstract: ABSTRACT. In March, 1997, 150 fresh fish specimens from the waters of Arabian Gulf, 95 of fish belonging to Groupers, Epinephelus aerolatus (local name Simman) and the other 55 fish specimens belonging to Emperor lethrinus sp. (local name Sheiry) were subjected to parasitological examination. Free floriceps Trypanorhyncha plerocercoids larvae were found in the flesh, while encysted forms of these larvae were found in the body cavity and mesenteries. The incidence of infection was higher in the Lethrinus sp. (3… Show more

“…In the present study, the prevalence of Trypanorhynch cestode larvae was 42% among the examined three fish species. This finding was lower than that reported by [22] (59.06%) among other Mediterranean Sea fishes in Egypt while it was higher than that recorded from the Red Sea [21] (20%) in Egypt, [15] ( 24.3 % in mesenteries and 1.26 % of the flesh of the examined fishes) in [23] from the Arabian Gulf (34.5% in Lethrinus sp. and 24.2% In Epinephelus sp) in Saudi Arabia.…”

“…Numerous studies have detailed the presence and morphological features of Trypanorhyncha species infecting groupers [3,4,7,9,[24][25][26]28,[34][35][36]. Notwithstanding, information on the pathological effects produced by these parasites remains limited.…”

“…These fish have high commercial importance in the tropical and subtropical waters around the world, where they usually are abundant in estuaries [2,3]. They are frequently infected with cestodes of the order Trypanoryncha Diesing, 1863 [4], which is a cosmopolitan group of marine cestodes [5]. Trypanoryncha comprises about 270 species [6].…”
