Histopathology diagnosis in women who underwent a hysterectomy for a benign condition

Abstract: Hysterectomy will remain a common gynecological operation in both developing and developed countries. The clinical and the pathological correlation are poor, when abdominal pain or dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB) was the preoperative clinical diagnosis. However, there was a very high correlation when the clinical diagnosis was a fibroid. All hysterectomy specimens should be sent for histopathology regardless of the preoperative histopathology of the endometrium.

“…The prevalence of adenomyosis in our large cohort of 1697 patients who underwent hysterectomy was 43.3%, which is within the range of reported prevalence but appears to be slightly higher than some recently reported studies . Difference in race and ethnicity aside, many other factors could be attributed to the difference, such as the difference in the proportion of referral patients, and inclusion criteria for hysterectomy.…”

“…In this study, the most common clinical indication for hysterectomy was uterine leiomyoma in 42.96% (229/533) cases followed by uterovaginal prolapse in 18.95% (101/533) cases which was consistent with the data reported by Nisa et al, 14 (33% and 19%, respectively) and Siwatch et al, 15 (39% and 22.6%, respectively). Menorrhagia was the most common indication in similar studies by Rather et al, 13 (35.43%) and Saleh et al, 16 (39%) whereas uterovaginal prolapse was the commonest indication in a study by Jha et al, 9 (37.1%).…”
