Histopathological spectrum of polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma

Abstract: Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinomas (PLGA) are distinctive salivary gland neoplasms, with an almost exclusive propensity to arise from the minor salivary glands. PLGA frequently manifests as an asymptomatic, slow-growing mass within the oral cavity, which must be separated from adenoid cystic carcinoma and benign mixed tumor for therapeutic and prognostic considerations. We report a case of a 67-year-old male, who presented with a long-standing mass in the palate. This lesion was diagnosed as PLGA based on … Show more

“… 3 Most commonly it presents in the sixth or seventh decade of life with a 2:1 predilection for females. 4 High rates of perineural invasion have been reported. 5 The 10-year relative survival is 98.8%, and complete surgical resection is the preferred treatment of choice.…”

“…Hence surgical excision was performed without radiation therapy. Histological reports of PLGA may show several variations such as solid, trabecular, ductal, tubular, cribriform, cystic and papillary cystic patterns, but the infiltrating cells and the cytological features remain more or less the same [10,11]. This was considered while reviewing the histological picture.…”

“…When compared to adenoid cystic carcinoma, staining is positive for p-53, ki-67, bcl-2, and CD117. Perineural invasion is a feature of both PAC and adenoid cystic carcinoma, but the presence of the targetoid arrangement of perineural invasion is characteristic of PAC [ 17 ]. Also, in comparison to PAC, the cells of adenoid cystic carcinoma are smaller with hyperchromatic and angulated nuclei, less cytoplasm, and a coarser nuclear chromatin [ 18 ].…”
