Histopathological features and their prognostic impact in nodular lymphocyte‐predominant Hodgkin lymphoma – a matched pair analysis from the German Hodgkin Study Group (GHSG)

Abstract: SummaryNodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL) is a rare lymphoma entity. We performed a matched-pair analysis to evaluate the prognostic impact of several histopathological features in this distinct Hodgkin lymphoma subtype. Lymph node samples of NLPHL patients were tested for CD15, IgD, phosphorylated STAT6, ICOS and Epstein-Barr virus status of the malignant lymphocyte-predominant cells as well as epithelioid cell clusters and activated T cells in the microenvironment. None of these features… Show more

“…Atypical nLPHL comprised just over a fifth of our cohort (n = 13; 22%), which is slightly less than in adults with nLPHL in published literature (Hartmann et al, 2014(Hartmann et al, , 2013a as the cohort is relatively small it is possible that in a larger cohort of patients the number of children with atypical nLPHL may be higher. However, this is the first report of histological variants of nLPHL in children and it may be that diagnostic criteria used in the previous studies were different.…”

“…The small size of our cohort in this report makes it difficult to draw conclusions about the prognostic significance of immunoglobulin isotype expression in nLPHL although it is reported to have some significance in B‐cell NHL (Lindemalm et al , ). A recent report on histological features and their prognostic impact, including expression of IgD, on outcome in adult patients with nLPHL revealed a non‐significant trend towards a lower relapse rate in patients whose presenting lymph node contained epithelioid cell clusters (Hartmann et al , ).…”

“…Hartman S. et al, performed a matched‐pair analysis to evaluate the prognostic impact of several histopathological features in NLPHL. None of the histopathological features was associated with a particular clinical outcome . A recent analysis of 99 relapsed NLPHL patients, which were obtained from the database of German Hodgkin Study Group (GHSG), has also documented a favorable outcome even after relapsed disease.…”
