Histopathological effects of waterborne silver nanoparticles and silver salt on the gills and liver of goldfish Carassius auratus

Abstract: This study aimed to compare histopathological effect of waterborne silver nanoparticles and silver salt (AgNO 3 ) on the gills and liver of Carassius auratus. Therefore, one hundred and five live specimens of goldfish were obtained and treated in five aquariums with 0, 0.01, 0.025, 0.05, and 0.1 ppm of AgNO 3 and 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1, and 5 ppm of Ag nanoparticles (mean particle size of 5 nm). Fish were sampled after 14 days of exposure. Results showed that the kinds of pathologies observed with Ag NPs were broadly … Show more

“…Beneficial role of histopathological biomarker in monitoring of pollutants in aquatic ecosystem has been confirmed in previous studies (Abarghuei et al, ; Banaee, Sureda, Mirvagefei, & Ahmadi, ; Camargo & Martinez, ). Due to entrance of disinfectants materials to aquatic ecosystems, betadine penetrates to water and it had been shown that is toxic for carp, so this study is done to determine the possible effects of betadine solution on the liver and gill tissue of common carp.…”

“…For this study120‐carp (17 ± 3 g) were kept for 14 days in the 100‐l aquarium. For adaptation to experimental conditions, fish in photoperiod of 13 hr of darkness and 11 hr of light were kept and maintained twice a day at a rate of 2% of body weight with a functional commercial diet (Abarghuei et al, ). Water replaced every 24 hr during the experimental period, Water physicochemical parameters measurements include (21 ± 1°C: water temperature, pH 6.7–7.9, dissolved oxygen concentration: 7–9 mg/L and water hardness: 210 mg calcium carbonate per liter).…”

“…Toxicity of silver to different fish in vivo has been investigated by researchers (Abarghoei, Hedayati, Ghorbani, Miandareh, & Bagheri, ; Janes & Playle, ; Wood, Playle, & Hogstrand, ; Yue et al, ; Zhou, Nichols, Playle, & Wood, ). In aquatic environment, Ag‐NPs release silver ions, which is can cause toxicity to fish by blocking the Na + K + ATPase and disturbing the ion regulation of Na + and Cl − ions across the gills (Bury & Wood, ).…”
