Histopathological and ultrastructural studies of Myxobolus turpisrotundus from allogynogenetic gibel carp Carassius auratus gibelio in China

Abstract: Abstract:During an ongoing systematic survey on species diversity of myxozoans parasitising allogynogenetic gibel carp Carassius auratus gibelio (Bloch) in China, plasmodia were detected in the fins, lip, jaw, gill chamber, gill arches, operculum and oral cavity of infected fish. Combining the morphological and molecular data, the present species was identified as Myxobolus turpisrotundus Zhang, Wang, Li et Gong, 2010. Histopathological examination revealed that despite infecting different organs, M. turpisrot… Show more

“…However, based on the classification system of Molnár [ 35 ], the infection site of narrow-type spores (intralamellar-vascular, LV3) (Additional file 1 : Figure S1) and M. toyamai (intrafilamental-epithelial, FE) are different [ 31 ]. Despite the totally different tissue-specificity between the narrow-type spores and M. toyamai , there have been cases in which one myxozoan species was found to infect multiple tissues/organs [ 34 , 36 ]. Taken together, these data do not allow narrow-type spores and M. toyamai to be easily distinguished and their relationship needs further investigation.…”

“…Moreover, molecular studies allow the separation of morphologically indistinguishable species (Cech et al 2012), thereby resolving the taxonomic ambiguities existing in many species. Members of the genus Myxobolus are generally known to exhibit high levels of tissue and host speci cities and hence these features are also considered important in the taxonomy of the group (Guo et al 2016).…”
