Histopathologic Evaluation of Hyaluronic Acid and Plasma-Rich Platelet Injection into Rabbit Vocal Cords: An Experimental Study

Abstract: HYA and PRP can be safely injected into vocal cords. Our findings show that HYA is a biocompatible and safe injection material for clinical use. Only two of the six vocal cords showed HYA at the end of two months, suggesting that HYA is a short-term effective material. Similarly, PRP was also shown to be a short-term effective material and can be used in patients for testing purpose before using a long-term effective material. The advantages of PRP are that it is inexpensive, readily available, and completely … Show more

“…PRP is a biological material shown to stimulate host tissue rejuvenation without eliciting immune rejection as it is derived from the patient's own blood. The composition of PRP consists primarily of a high concentration of platelets and growth factors but can also include white blood cells and other vasoactive and chemotactic agents 29 . PRP releases growth factors that expedite wound healing via cell proliferation, matrix formation, osteoid production, connective tissue healing, angiogenesis, and collagen synthesis 30,31 .…”

“…PRP injections have been shown to have a broad range of applications in tissue sealing, stabilization, scar maturation, osteogenesis, and alopecia across various surgical specialties from orthopedics to cosmetic surgery with virtually no adverse side effects 32–34 . In vivo studies revealed the effect of PRP in vocal fold healing in rabbit models following acute vocal fold injury 29 . In otolaryngology, the wound healing properties of PRP have previously been used to treat tympanic membrane perforation 35 .…”

“…This trial contributes to further research on PVRP-based treatment for hearing loss ( Stolle et al, 2018 ), facial nerve palsy ( Sánchez et al, 2018 ), dysphonia ( Cobden et al, 2016 ; Özgürsoy et al, 2018 ), dysphagia ( Vidovic and Delling, 2017 ), anosmia ( Yasak et al, 2018 ), soft-tissue defects ( Eryılmaz et al, 2016 ; Tambella et al, 2018 ), or laryngotracheal reconstruction ( Sahin Onder et al, 2020 ). In addition, sterile PVRP could be administered to the sterile human body areas.…”

“…A few animal studies have reported favorable results in vocal fold healing using PRP following acute vocal fold injury [ 11 , 12 , 13 ]. To the best of our knowledge, there are currently no human studies regarding the effect of PRP on voice outcomes following phonosurgery.…”
