Histology of the digestive system of the garfishBelone belone(Teleostei: Belonidae)

Abstract: Five garfish Belone belone (Linnaeus, 1761) were sampled to study the morphology of the digestive system. Hematoxylineosin staining as well as Alcian blue/PAS (Periodic Acid Schiff) were used in order to elucidate the histological features of the digestive organs in garfish. Garfish B. belone is a stomachless fish whose digestive system is a hollow tube made of oesophagus and intestines. The oesophagus consists of three distinctive layers: the mucosa, the muscular layer and the outer layer. The oesophageal epi… Show more

“…All along the length of the intestines four different layers could be distinguished: mucosa, submucosa, muscular layer and serosa. The same was described in some other fishes (PAVELIN et al, 2018;BOČINA et al, 2017;BEBIĆ et al, 2020). Intestinal mucosa of salema porgy is lined with single layered columnar epithelium with microvilli and goblet cells with acid MPS previously described in some other fishes (ABDULHADI, 2005;KOZARIĆ et al, 2006;PAVELIN et al, 2018;BOČINA et al, 2016).…”

“…Six micrometers thick transversally cut tissue samples were mounted on glass slides. To present basic mor-phology of the digestive system, after deparaffinization in xylene, tissue samples were stained with haematoxylin-eosin (H&E) (Hematoxylin M, BioGnost, Croatia; Eosin Y 1% aqueous, BioGnost, Croatia) staining (BOČINA et al, 2016;BOČINA et al, 2017). Alcian blue/PAS (AB/PAS) technique was used to observe histochemical composition of mucosal cells while Orcein-Giemsa staining techniques was used to see whether there are some elastic fibers in the wall of salema porgy's digestive system.…”

“…General organisation of the intestine in both species showed the basic features of the teleost intestine, with a small intestine and a rectum scarcely differentiated and goblet cells secreting neutral and acidic mucins increasing in number posteriorly (Wilson & Castro, ). The distribution and mucin composition of goblet cells varies widely among teleosts (Bočina et al ., , ; Cao & Wang, ; Çinar, K., & Şenol, ; Petrinec et al ., ; Reifel & Travill, ; Wang et al ., ) and several attempts have been made to relate the mucous composition to environmental, dietary and pathologic factors (Domeneghini et al ., ; Petrinec et al ., and references therein). Differences in the composition of the mucins observed between the sampled species probably reflect different functional requirements resulting from the agastric v .…”

“…The digestive system in vertebrates consists of the alimentary canal and associated organs such as liver, gallbladder and pancreas [15]. The morphology of the digestive tract in fishes is usually in accordance with differences in their feeding habits, as was studied in numerous fish species [10,[16][17][18][19][20][21]. The structure of the intestines is usually consistent among vertebrates, but those of stomach shows remarkable diversity [22].…”

“…The present study has shown that the liver of cage-reared S. aurata consists of two lobes. The liver of garfish Belone contains one simple lobe [21], while the liver of Merluccius merluccius consists of three lobes [20]. The hepatocytes of the liver parenchyma in cage-reared gilthead sea bream are damaged due to high accumulation of fat inside them.…”
