Histological, Histochemical, and Ultrastructural Aspects of Interstitial Tissue from the Contralateral Testis in Infertile Men with Monolateral Varicocele

Abstract: Initial maturative arrest, thickening of the tubular wall, and involution-degeneration of the Leydig cells are the most frequent lesions observed in contralateral testis in men affected by monolateral varicocele. Alterations observed in the Leydig cells at the electron microscope appear to support the hypothesis of hyperstimulation of the cells with rapid degeneration.

“…A multinucleated cell containing several regularly outlined spherical nuclei (N 1 ), irregularly outlined nucleus (N 2 ) with indentations (thick arrows), interconnected mitochondria (thin arrow) and abundant lipid droplets (Li) are seen. 5875 Cameron et al 1980;Terguem and Dadoune 1981;Pujol et al 1982;Spera et al 1983;Haider et al 1986;Santoro et al 1999) studies. To our knowledge, however, the status of the testes after varicocelectomy has not been studied in detail at the ultrastructural level.…”
