Histological grading in primary membranous nephropathy is essential for clinical management and predicts outcome of patients

Abstract: AimsDiagnosis of primary membranous nephropathy (PMN) is mainly based on immunofluorescence/immunohistochemistry findings. However, assessment of specific features on optical microscopy can help to estimate the severity of the disease, guide treatment and predict the response. The aim of this study was to identify, classify and grade the precise histological findings in PMN to predict renal function outcome and guide treatment. Methods and resultsHistological parameters, including focal segmental sclerosis (FSG… Show more

“…In symptoms, MN patients often do not present gross hematuria. Some patients can achieve spontaneous remission ( Stangou et al, 2019 ). With the increase of its incidence, more and more discussions on its pathogenesis have been made.…”

“…The histopathological features of IMN also play an indispensable role in the assessment of the disease progression. 17,20,24 Glomerulosclerosis is the result and one of the major pathological bases of CKD. Mesangial proliferation is a hallmark of many glomerulonephrites, which may ultimately cause glomerulosclerosis.…”

“…In a recent study, Stangou et al [ 28 ] investigated a large cohort of 752 patients with pMN over a long-term follow-up period (112–376 months). These authors found that the presence of FSGS and the degree of TA were significant independent parameters for the prediction of renal function outcome, as determined by multiple regression analysis.…”
