Histological features of peritoneal lavage with ropivacaine in rats with fecal peritonitis

Abstract: PURPOSE:To evaluate the histological features in lungs, peritoneum and liver of rats subjected to fecal peritonitis and treated with peritoneal lavage with 0.2% ropivacaine. METHODS: Twenty Wistar rats were subjected to laparotomy 6 h after the fecal peritonitis induction with autogenous stool. Rats were randomly distributed into 4 groups: I -(n=5) Control, no treatment; II -(n=5) Drying of the abdominal cavity; III -(n=5) Abdominal cavity lavage with 3 ml 0.9% saline solution and drying; and IV -(n=5) Abdomin… Show more

“…Additionally, the follow-up is usually short in time, and there is no mention to mean age of the animals [29][30][31][32] . Almost all of these studies lend no support to concept that antibiotics or others substances produce reduction of the morbidity and mortality for sepsis secondary to peritonitis 9,30 .…”

“…Although this outcome would be expected, it is necessary to assess the used model as regard to elderly rats. The usual dosage of autogenously 10% fecal suspension for testing therapeutically intervention is 5 ml/kg 6,21 . In these papers the rats included in the investigation weighed 300g to 330g, however there was no mention to the ages of the rats in some studies 5,6 , and in other the rats were very young (between two and three months).…”

“…intraabdominal sepsis in rat model describe the animals as adult male, Wistar-albino rats weighing from 250 to 320 g. However, chronological ages are not specified in most of the studies [5][6][7] . On the other hand, some studies used very young Wistar rats (age between two and three months, and weight between 200 and 250g) 8 .…”

“…In this regard, several substances have been used aiming at controlling or modulating the inflammatory cascade that is produced after peritonitis occurs. The results seem to be acceptable 16,17 however the main goal for treating severe intra-abdominal infection is not dealt in a rational way -it means not battling the overgrow of microorganisms in this cavity or in blood stream.…”
