“…McCaughey (1958) was rather guarded on the subject mentioning metastases to lung and liver but regarding more distant spread as unusual, though not in itself a reason for changing the diagnosis. In other accounts (Churg, Rosen and Moolten, 1965;Hourihane, 1964;Payling Wright and Heard, 1966) the infrequence of distant metastases has been emphasized, so much so that when these have been present the diagnosis has been regarded as uncertain or even been rejected. Evans (1966) summarizes a commonly held view when he says 'at the present stage of our knowledge of these tumours the diagnosis in such cases is open to question since the distinction from other widely metastasizing neoplasms is difficult'.…”

“…The tumours were relatively homogeneous in histological appearance, in contrast to the pleomorphism which has been described in mesotheliomas from other experimental animals (Wagner et al, 1962;Smith ef al., 19656) and also in man (McCaughey, 1958(McCaughey, , 1965Churg et al, 1965). Secondly, many of them were infiltrated with chronic inflammatory cells.…”

“…It was reported that confidence in the diagnosis of diffuse mesothelioma during an autopsy rested on the ability to exclude other tumors (McCaughey 1965). In one report, however, 30 cases of mesothelioma were studied histopathologically (Churg et al 1965). The association of the mesothelioma occurrence to asbestos exposure has been suggested (Hourihane 1965;Vigliani et al 1965;McDonald et al 1970), and it is reported that the elevated level of acid mucopolysaccharide in serous effusion may be useful for the diagnosis of mesothelioma (Thompson et al 1969).…”
