Histologic Changes in Skin Associated with Aging

Abstract: This is a review of histologic changes noted in the skin of elderly individuals. Among the epidermal changes associated with skin aging are a flattened dermal-epidermal junction, giving the appearance of atrophy and cellular heterogeneity. The melanocyte density declines slowly, and the Langerhans cells decrease in number with advancing age. Among the dermal changes are attenuation in the number and diameter of elastic fibers in the papillary dermis, an increase in number and thickness of the same fibers in th… Show more

“…Dermal connective tissue changes induced by long-term UV irradiation lead to light skin damage and the appearance of aging (25). As the primary producers of the ECM scaffold, dermal fibroblasts are the basis of the occurrence of photoaging (8,26,27).…”

“…The thickness of the epidermis remains fairly constant with age [10], but there is a flattening of the dermal-epidermal junction, which allows the appearance of atrophy [11]. In addition, the Textbook of Aging Skin DOI 10.1007/978-3-642-27814-3_136-1 # Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2015 time taken by the keratinocytes to migrate from the basal layer to the skin surface, a key process in repair, increases by 50 % in the elderly [12].…”

“…In addition, there is a flattening of the papillary dermis, decreasing surface contact between the dermis and epidermis [13]. This predisposes separation of the dermal-epidermal junction with laterally applied tension [11]. Furthermore, the cellular content of the dermis (fibroblasts, mast cells, Langerhans cells, and macrophages) also decreases with age [14].…”
