“…Animals from the north are much larger than those from the south; this was the basis for defining 0. c. h w l y i as distinct from 0. c. cuniculus. The name huxleyi, originally used by Haeckel (1874) to define a separate species based on Madeiran animals (Corbet, 1994), has generally been applied to animals both from Mediterranean Europe and those islands where the rabbit was clearly introduced from southern Europe (Miller, 1912, Ellerman & Morrison-Scott, 1951, Gibb, However, from the results of the PCAs, it is clear that the variation in size of the rabbit in Europe occurs in a continuous cline with no clear break. Furthermore, there were no consistent inter-group differences in shape across the continent, and the PCAs failed to iden@ any clear distinction between the geographic localities on the basis of size or shape.…”

“…More recent studies produce conflicting views on the number of subspecies of 0. cuniculus. Ellerman & Morrison-Scott (195 1) list six subspecies: 0. c. cuniculus L., 1758 in the north of Europe; 0. c. huxleyi Haeckel, 1874 in the Iberian Peninsula; 0. c. brachyotus Trouessart,19 1 7 in the Camargue region of France; and three subspecies on the African mainland, 0. c. a @ w Loche, 1858, 0. c. oreas Cabrera, 1922, and 0. c. habehwi.s Cabrera, 1923. However, Gibb (1990, following Miller (1912), recognizes only two subspecies, 0. c. cuniculus and 0. c. huxleyi.…”

Στις περιοχές εξάπλωσης του αγριοκούνελου αναφέρονται βιβλιογραφικά 8 υποείδη, τα οποία είναι: O. c. algirus (Loche 1858), O. c. brachyotus (Trouessart 1917), O. c. cnossius (Bate 1906), O. c. cuniculus (Linnaeus 1758), O. c. habetensis (Cabrera 1923), O. c. huxleyi (Haeckel 1874), O. c. oreas (Cabrera 1922), και O. c. borcumensis (Harrison 1952) (Chapman and Flux 1990, Thompson and King 1994, Wilson and Reeder 2005.
