“…Several investigators have demonstrated varying M A 0 activity in myelinated fibres of the central and peripheral nervous system of different adult animals (ARIOKA and TANIMUKAI, 1957;HARKONEN et al, 1966;MANOCHA and BOURNE, 1966;SHANTHAVEERAPPA and BOURNE, 1964). In the present study the most significant increase in M A 0 activity was apparent in the myelinated fibres and supporting glial cells between 15 and 30 days but the increase in enzyme activity in some areas continued to 90 days.…”

“…MAO is mainly localized in the mitochondria (Cotzias and Dole, 1951;Arioka and Tanimukai, 1957 °Mixtures contained subcellular fractions, 100 µ 1 5 of Tris-HCl (pH 7.5), 50 µ of KC1, and 1 µ ß of MgCl2. Preincubation for 20 min at 37°in 0.5 ml in the presence or absence of 0.1 µ of pargyline.…”

“…MAO may be histochemically visualized in tissues by tetrazolium salts and other methods [30,495,1333], and tetrazolium reduction has been sugg~sted as an additional measure of MAO activity in vitro [1285]. Using the tryptaminetetrazolium method, SHIMIZU and MORIKAVA [1105] demonstrated that with the exception of locus coeruleus and nucleus ambiguous, which display a MAO reaction already in late foetal life, the remaining portions of the rat brain are practically negative for MAO activity until new-born life, then rapidly reaching adult activity within 3 weeks after birth.…”
