Histochemical, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural studies of gingival fibromatosis: a case report

Abstract: Gingival fibromatosis is a rare disease characterized by enlargement of the gingiva. The purpose of this study was to analyze a case of idiopathic gingival fibromatosis, using histochemical and immunohistochemical staining and transmission electron microscopy. The patient was a 39-year-old Japanese man, in whom the gingiva was enlarged throughout the entire mandible and maxilla. Specimens of gingival fibromatosis exhibited epithelial hyperplasia and increased amounts of collagen fiber bundles in the connective… Show more

“…Prior to reprobing, the same nitrocellulose membrane was incubated at 50°C for 30 min with stripping buffer (100 mM 2-mercaptoethanol, 2% SDS, and 62.5 mM Tris-HCl (pH 6.7)) (10). After a rinse in TBS, the membranes were incubated with the ECL detection reagents and exposed to Kodak film (23,28,29). If no band was detected, the same nitrocellulose membrane was blocked using 5% instant skim milk in TBS, followed by incubation with the primary and secondary antibodies as described (10,15,16).…”

“…The other contains prominent cytoplasm with well developed organelles. Those fibroblasts have been considered inactive and active, respectively (Collan et al, 1982;Sakamoto et al, 2002). The connective tissue in HGF also exhibits an accumulation of elastic and oxytalan fibers (Baptista, 2002;Chavrier & Couble, 1979;Doufexi et al, 2005;Hart et al, 2000;Sakamoto et al, 2002).…”

Although a rare finding, small osseous calcifications and abundant neurovascular bundles may also be present (Gunhan et al, 1995;Kelekis-Cholakis et al, 2002).…”
