Histochemical characteristics on minimodeling-based bone formation induced by anabolic drugs for osteoporotic treatment

Abstract: Modeling, the changes of bone size and shape, often takes place at the developmental stages, whereas bone remodeling-replacing old bone with new bone-predominantly occurs in adults. Unlike bone remodeling, bone formation induced by modeling i.e., minimodeling (microscopic modeling in cancellous bone) is independent of osteoclastic bone resorption. Although recently-developed drugs for osteoporotic treatment could induce minimodeling-based bone formation in addition to remodeling-based bone formation, few repor… Show more

“…The first to use this term was Frost ( Frost, 1966 ), and it was postulated later that minimodeling may continue in trabeculae throughout life ( Frost, 1990 ). It seems to contribute to a significant percentage of bone volume in special conditions such as CKD, parathyroidectomized and/or patients with ABD, and it has been popularized with the advent of new dual medications against OP, such as romosozumab ( Yamamoto et al, 2021 ). Increased mineralization of the minimodelling surface at the endocortical surface has also been observed in dialysis patients with ABD treated with the non-calcium-based phosphate binder lanthanum carbonate ( Yajima et al, 2013 ).…”
