“…Neutral mucins help in lubrication and, when predominant in the oesophagus, indicate pre‐gastric digestion (Cao & Wang, ). Unlike various species of Siluriformes and Characiformes (Cardoso et al, ; Faccioli et al, ; Ghosh & Chakrabarti, , ; Raji & Norouzi, ) in which histochemical reaction of the pyloric region of the stomach was found to be intense only for neutral mucous substances, P. brachypomus presented a strong histochemical response to all of the stains applied, thus demonstrating a greater chemical diversity of mucous substances. This result was similar to what was reported for two species of Anguilliformes (Domeneghini et al, ; Takiue & Akiyoshi, ).…”

“…In the present study, the finding that type II cells were more abundant in the posterior than the anterior intestine may indicate that the posterior intestine plays a functional role in the absorption of macromolecular proteins and assimilation of proteins for both digestive and defensive purposes (Vernier & Mellinger, ; Domeneghini et al ., ). Type III cells secrete acid glycoconjugates and neutral glycoconjugates and their functions overlap with those of type I as well as type II cells (Buchmann & Bresciani, ; Fiertak & Kilarski, ; Díaz et al ., ; Petrinec et al ., ; Cardoso et al ., ). The present study observed the lowest total number of type III cells in the gastrointestinal tract of C. semilaevis .…”

“…Non-specific esterase (NSE) plays a crucial role in ester and protein metabolism, whereas peroxidase (POD), which is often found in peroxisomes, protects cells against harmful substances by converting these into non-toxic materials. The mucous cells secrete a muco-substance that lubricates and increases digestive efficiency of food, as well as protecting the mucosa from proteolytic damage and regulating pH (Gisbert et al, 1999;Domeneghini et al, 2005;Díaz et al, 2008;Cardoso et al, 2015). The mucus of goblet cells, in addition to the glycocalyx and brush border enzymes of enterocytes such as ALP, protects the organism from invading pathogenic microorganisms (Liu et al, 2009).…”
