Histoarchitecture and Histochemical Studies on the Lacrimal Gland of Pig (Sus scrofa)

Abstract: The fresh tissues were collected from five pigs of either sex and processed for histomorphological studies. The gland was located on dorso-lateral aspect of the eye in the orbital cavity. The gland was multilobar tubulo-acinar with predominance of acini. It was covered by a thick connective tissue capsule and connective tissue septa, which penetrate into the glandular parenchyma and divided the gland into lobes and lobules. The acini were of mixed type but predominantly sero-mucous in nature. The secretory uni… Show more

“…The lacrimal gland produces mucoserous secretions, as observed in the dorsal lacrimal glands of sheep and dogs (Gargiulo et al, 2000;Martin et al, 1988;Sinha & Calhoun, 1966). Meanwhile, the lacrimal gland produces mucous secretions in canines (Martin et al, 1988), but the lacrimal gland produces serous secretions in cows, pigs, cats, rabbits and rats (Gahlot et al, 2020;Lorber, 1989;Pinard et al, 2003;Prince et al, 1960; Shackleford & Kapper, 1962). According to Marcos et al (2002), mucus plays an important role as a protective factor and produces a further reduction in surface tension.…”

“…Histologically, the parotid gland in the examined lowland tapir consisted of a number of large lobes, which were formed by purely serous alveoli similar to humans, horses, donkeys, domestic ruminants, neonatal Indian buffalo, southern white-breasted hedgehogs, rats, rabbits, mice, African giant pouched rats, European hamsters, baboons, Zaedyus pichiy, and African palm squirrels [1,5,7,9,[14][15][16]62,63,[73][74][75][76][77][78]. Quinterelli and Dellovo [32] also report that the parotid gland was serous in tapirs, although they fail to indicate the species.…”

“…In addition, carbonate and phosphate ions help maintain the correct pH in the oral cavity. Saliva is also rich in other ions (including calcium and phosphates) responsible for maintaining the balance between demineralization and remineralization, which play important roles in caries formation [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. In addition, saliva is involved in the immunological response through IgA and plays a role in secreting potassium and resorbing sodium [13][14][15][16][17].…”

“…In early adulthood, differentiated acinar cells continue to express Sox9 and Sox10 and cytokeratin proteins are commonly coexpressed, particularly cytokeratin 5 and 14 18 . Human and mouse LG acinar secretory compartment is classified as seromucous [15 , 23] ; however, human LG have predominantly mucous cells [23] , a hallmark similar to its porcine counterpart [24] . Both types of acinar cells are arranged in a mosaic pattern as a secretory unit with a narrow lumen surrounded by myoepithelial cells and connective tissue [22] .…”
