Histiotus magellanicus (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae)

Abstract: Histiotus magellanicus (Philippi, 1866) is a vespertilionid bat called the southern big-eared brown bat. The dark color of the ears and the absence of a connecting band between the ears are the characters that clearly differentiate this species from all other species of Histiotus. It is a little-known species with a distribution restricted to the southern portions of Argentina and Chile. H. magellanicus is listed as “Least Concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.

“…A third species, Lasiurus varius (cinnamon red bat), may also inhabit this region, based on an observation from the Magellan Strait. Histiotus magellanicus is the larger of the two species (forearm: 42-47 mm; weight: 12-22 g), and is found in native and non-native forests throughout central and southern Chile (Rodriguez San Pedro et al, 2016;Díaz et al 2019). This species roosts in holes and fissures within the largest decaying trees available in their stands (Altamirano et al 2017), as well as underneath the loose bark of dead trees (Peña & Barria 1972).…”

“…The genus is found on all continents except Antarctica, with the greatest diversity found in South America ( Wilson and Reeder 2005 ). In South America, Eptesicus comprises 16 species so far ( Díaz et al 2019 ). Eptesicus inhabit almost every ecosystem on the continent, from the high altitudes of the Andes ( Baker 1974 ), to the coastal Atlantic Forest of Brazil ( Miranda et al 2007 ), the semiarid pampas of Argentina ( Barquez et al 2012 ), the Atacama desert ( Ossa et al 2014 ), and the temperate forest of southern Chile ( Altamirano et al 2017 ).…”

“…Divergence from genus Eptesicus sensu stricto has taken place rather recently, with a Cytochrome b ( CYTB )-dated tree by Giménez et al (2019) suggesting a split with Eptesicus occurring roughly 5 Ma. The development of the Andean region, glacial cycles, and associated glacial refugia most likely contributed to early diversification of Histiotus ( Díaz et al 2019 ; Giménez et al 2019 ). The subgenus, with suggested taxonomic status of Eptesicus ( H .…”
