Histiocytic Sarcoma with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia a Rare Association: Case Report and Literature Review

Abstract: Definition and diagnostic criteria for histiocytic sarcoma (HS) have changed over last two decades due to available new immunohistochemical markers, as well as better understanding of the biology of disease. We report here a case of 4 years old boy diagnosed as acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), who later developed HS of pleura, when he was on maintenance phase of ALL protocol. HS constitutes less than 1 % of the haematolymphoid neoplasm, even more rare is association of HS with ALL. Thus reporting here a rar… Show more

“…There is no standardized treatment and therefore each case must be discussed in a multidisciplinary team. In terms of systemic therapy there is no "ideal" protocol; however, carboplatin, ifosfamide, etoposide, vincristine, and anthracyclines have been used in schemas designed for patients with aggressive lymphomas [1][2][3][4]. Here, we present the first documented case in Costa Rica of a patient with HS and extensive mucocutaneous involvement developed in a patient with an acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) during chemotherapy treatment.…”

“…[2,5,6] It can occur as an isolated entity or can accompany another hemato-lymphoid malignancy such as Follicular Lymphoma and Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia due to clonal association. [8] The diagnosis is generally that of exclusion and requires an unequivocal evidence of neoplasia with cells proved to be of monocyte/macrophage lineage.…”

“…Histiocytic sarcoma is a very aggressive [1] malignant [2]- [5] and rare lymphoide tissue [6] with poor prognosis [4]. It is derived from histiocytes and it may result from stem cell transformation in neoplastic hematologic disease [3] [4].…”
