(Version November 9th, 2015) Abstract Based on an established theoretical framework of the drivers of inventive performance, the so-called KSAO (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other) factors, this paper seeks to explain empirically the performance of inventors throughout their careers. We combine survey information spanning the inventors' entire careers and psychometric test evidence, with patent history data for more than 1,000 inventors. We also control for variables that have traditionally been included in estimations of inventive performance such as inventor age and a broad list of applicant institution-, technology-, patent-, and period-related information. We show that educational level, skills acquired during the career, personality traits, career motivations, cognitive abilities, and cognitive problem-solving style are significantly related to inventive performance. The purpose of this paper is to expand the research base on creativity by assessing engineering students' creative self-concepts. A cross-sectional study of first-year and senior engineering students was conducted to investigate three constructs that measure creative selfconcept: creative self-efficacy, creative personal identity, and creative expectations. Gender differences in how creative self-concepts differ from first-year to senior year were also explored. The results show that female students have lower average scores on a creative self-efficacy scale at both the first and senior years. First-year female students have higher average creative identity scores than male students. However, senior male students have a stronger creative identity than senior female students. Senior males and females feel that instructors have lower expectations regarding creative behaviors as compared to first-year students. The lower expectation of senior students suggest that engineering instructors should consider ways to engage upper level students in creative behaviors. Future research includes a longitudinal study to examine how creative selfconcept changes in progression through the engineering curriculum.

Mehmet Vurkaç is an associate professor of Electrical Engineering and Renewable Energy (EERE) at Oregon Institute of Technology, where he has also taught courses in critical thinking, percussion, and mathematics.Vurkaç is on sabbatical at Seattle University, in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, for the academic year 2016-'17.Vurkaç earned his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering in December 2011 at Portland State University, with research at the confluence of machine learning, information theory, philosophy of science, music information retrieval, and mathematical music theory. His current research areas are engineering education, music information retrieval (DSP and machine learning), music perception, and mathematical music theory.Prior to tenure track (1994 through 2010), Vurkaç taught in the following academic settings.
