Hippocampal neurons in the monkey with activity related to the place in which a stimulus is shown

Abstract: In order to analyze the functions of the hippocampus in the primate, and to advance the understanding of amnesia, the activity of 994 single hippocampal neurons in the monkey was analyzed during the performance of a task known to be affected by hippocampal damage in which both an object, and its position in space, must be remembered. Electrophysiological recording studies show that the incidence of neuronal response changes related to the familiarity of individual stimuli is low in the hippocampus (Xiang and Brown, 1998); however, hippocampal neurons do respond to spatial location information and on some occasions show a selective response to the position of a stimulus in space (Rolls et al, 1989). Finally, we cannot exclude the possibility that performance of the object-in-place task is a property of the hippocampal-prefrontal-perirhinal circuit as a whole.…”
