“…In fact, steroid application is not typically the first-choice treatment for stomatitis. However, this admixture paste contains hinokitiol, the active ingredient in Refrecare H®, which has been shown to exert anti-microbial activity against Candida and to inhibit biofilm formation [ 22 , 23 ].…”

“…Hinokitiol, a tropolone monoterpene isolated from cupressaceous plants, exhibits diverse pharmacological effects, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor and antimicrobial activities [6] , [7] , [8] , [9] . Hinokitiol has been used in food preservation and has excellent biological safety, with low cytotoxicity towards many normal human cell lines, such as human pulp cells, oral epithelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells, and low chronic toxicity in vivo [9] , [10] , [11] , [12] , [13] . Hinokitiol has been suggested to inhibit the growth and virulence factors of Candida species by regulating the Ras1-cAMP-PKA pathway and transcription factors associated with hyphal formation [14] , but the exact molecular mechanisms of the antifungal action of hinokitiol remain elusive.…”
