Highly Transmitting ZrO2‐Doped Lu2O3 Ceramics from Combustion Synthesized Powders

Abstract: Before shaping, Lu 2 O 3 powders doped with different ZrO 2 concentrations were synthesized by a simple combustion method and milled. The shaped green bodies were sintered at 1850°C for 6 h in vacuum. The transmittance and microstructure of the resultant ceramics were characterized by spectrophotometer and SEM. The effects of ZrO 2 concentration on the microstructure and optical property of transparent Lu 2 O 3 ceramics were evaluated. When doped with 5 at.% ZrO 2 , the Lu 2 O 3 ceramic showed the best optical… Show more

“…The average grain size of the samples decreased with the increase of ZrO 2 content. Similar phenomena also occured in the ZrO 2 -doped Y 2 O 3 and Lu 2 O 3 ceramics [17,20]. As we know, Zr 4+ was an effective grain growth inhibitor in the sintering of Y 2 O 3 and Lu 2 O 3 ceramics.…”

“…As discussed above, the processing technologies are critical for the preparation of Ce:GAGG-based ceramic with high transparency. Recently, highly transparent sesquioxide, such as Y 2 O 3 [17][18][19] and Lu 2 O 3 [20] ceramics were prepared via ZrO 2 doping. What is more important, it was also reported by Nakamura that small amount of ZrO 2 doping could lead to higher fluorescence intensity for the Ce:GAGG-based ceramics [21].…”

“…It is worth to notice that the grain size reduced greatly at first, but then became a litter larger with the increase of Er 3+ doping concentrations between the range 0~10 mol%. Similar phenomena have also observed in the tetravalence Zr 4+ ions (ZrO 2 ) doped Y 2 O 3 and Lu 2 O 3 transparent ceramics [33,34]. When Lu 3+ or Y 3+ was replaced by the Zr 4+ ions, two tetravalent Zr 4+ requires one oxygen interstitial ion for charge compensation and the additional oxygen interstitial retards the diffusion of cations, which decreased grain boundary mobility of ceramics and led to the reduction of grain size.…”

“…High sinterable powders with small and uniform particle size and low agglomeration are vital for the achievement of high optical quality transparent ceramics. As the previous papers reported, Lu 2 O 3 nano‐powders have been successfully synthesized in different methods, such as precipitation, homogeneous precipitation, solid‐state method, flame spray synthesis, laser ablation method, combustion with ball‐milling . Compared to the others, co‐precipitation method is promising to synthesize pure phase, good crystallinity Yb:Lu 2 O 3 nano‐powders with excellent chemical homogeneity.…”
