Highly synergistic antimicrobial activity of spherical and flower-like hierarchical titanium dioxide/silver composites

Abstract: ABSTRACT:A spherical titanium dioxide/silver (TiO 2 /Ag) composite and a flower-like hierarchical TiO 2 /Ag composite were prepared via a template-induced method and a solvothermal method based on the Ag/Carbon spheres templates followed by calcination treatment, respectively. The morphologies of the composites were controlled by changing the concentration of reactants and calcination temperature. The antibacterial efficiency of the composites was evaluated with both Gram-negative Escherichia coli and 2 specie… Show more

“…have been documented(Ramezani, Rahmani & Dehestani, 2017;Naz et al, 2017). Few plants extraction and effective bacteriostatic component exhibited synergistic or additive interaction with antibiotics against drug-resistant bacteria(Eskandary, Tahmourespour, Hoodaji & Abdollahi, 2017; Ye et al, 2017). Screening of crude extracts for synergistic or additive interaction with antibiotics is expected to provide bioactive compounds to be used in combinational therapy.…”

“…The other thing concerning these composites, which should be highlighted, is the possible synergistic effect between two or more antimicrobial agents. This effect was found in Ag-TiO 2 prepared by solvothermal method [40] and at the similar configuration, the greater specific surface area of the material helps the antimicrobial activity as well [41]. Other studies reported the use of photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 for enhancing antimicrobial activity [42], or induction of supportive photothermal effect on AgNPs [43].…”

“…Similarly, Ye et al have shown that the flower-like hierarchical TiO 2 /Ag composites with slightly higher activity than spherical ones decompose bacterial cells (both E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus), due to the synergistic effect of the generated ROS and release of Ag ions [118]. On the other hand, the stability of Ag/TiON (on polyester) photocatalyst has been shown in repetitive experiments for bacterial inactivation under indoor light, suggesting that leaching of Ag into the environment does not happened [119].…”
