Highly sensitive optical sensor system for blood leakage detection

Abstract: A highly sensitive method for the detection of blood leakage has been developed, and a practical sensor system for blood concentration measurement has been constructed. The present method is based on the attenuation of laser light by blood cells. The effects of the fluctuations of the incident laser light power are eliminated by normalizing the attenuated light intensity by the incident light intensity. A part of the incident laser light is reflected by a beam splitter mounted at the entrance of the test cell,… Show more

“…To prevent such accidents during hemodialysis, various sensors to detect blood leakage have been proposed [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]. Of these, a flexible sensor based on a film substrate fabricated using printing technology seems appropriate [ 6 , 7 ].…”

“…If another wavelength were used, that is, 630 nm, attenuation of light would be mainly due to scattering instead of absorption. [22] The phototransistor (IF-D92, Industrial Fiber Optics) is set up as a simple voltage divider circuit with a 220 kΩ resistor in series. The output from the LED and phototransistor is connected to an Arduino Mega 2560 microcontroller.…”
