Highly sensitive fiber Bragg grating refractive index sensors

Abstract: We combine fiber Bragg grating ͑FBG͒ technology with a wet chemical etch-erosion procedure and demonstrate two types of refractive index sensors using single-mode optical fibers. The first index sensor device is an etch-eroded single FBG with a radius of 3 m, which is used to measure the indices of four different liquids. The second index sensor device is an etch-eroded fiber Fabry-Pérot interferometer ͑FFPI͒ with a radius of ϳ1.5 m and is used to measure the refractive indices of isopropyl alcohol solutions o… Show more

“…As one of the most popular commercial refractometers, Abbé refractometer could reach 10 −4 RIU by using the total internal reflection phenomenon. The wave optics based methods exploit the wave nature of light and mainly measure the RI by diffraction, 6 forward/backward scattering 7,8 and interference ͑e.g., Fabry-Pérot, [9][10][11] Mach-Zehnder, 12,13 double slits, 14 Michelson, 15 low coherence, 16 and fiber Bragg gratings 17,18 ͒. These methods improve the sensitivity to 10 −4 -10 −6 RIU since the wavelength acts naturally as the absolute reference of length.…”

“…Thus, the reflected power would be attenuated by increasing the RI of the nanofluid. Liang et al [28] and Chen et al [30] have investigated high sensitive RI sensing by using the thinned fiber Bragg grating EW.…”

“…Since fiber optic sensors demonstrate small size, light weight, high resolution, immunity to electromagnetic interference, harsh environment operational capability, etc., many types of designs have been constructed and developed. Periodic structure grating-type fiber sensors, including long period grating (LPG), [21] tapered grating, [22] sampled FBG, [23] tilted FBG, [24,25] D-type FBG, [26] partial thinned FBG, [27,28] total uniform thinned FBG, [29,30] etc., were used to measure the RI and the concentration of the fluid without any nanoparticles. The basis of sensing principle and designing method based on the fiber sensors is similar and relies on the change of the evanescent field exposed in the surrounding medium.…”

“…They show no interference with electromagnetic radiation, so they can function in many hostile environments where conventional sensors would fail [32,33]. TbDyFe is one of the most promising magnetostrictive materials, especially TbDyFe has giant magnetostrictive coefficient [34,35].…”
