We report herein the first results of a CO 2 efflux survey carried out at Katanuma volcanic lake, Japan. A total of 110 CO 2 efflux measurements were undertaken at the lake by means of the floating accumulation chamber method during August 2010 to estimate the total CO 2 output from the studied area. Two different mechanisms of degassing were observed during the survey; (1) diffusion through the water-air interface and (2) bubbling. CO 2 efflux values ranged from 0.5 up to 322 g m −2 d −1 . In addition, the probability graph was used to distinguish the existence of different geochemical populations in the measured values. Sequential Gaussian Simulation was used to construct a map of CO 2 efflux from 200 simulations and to compute the total CO 2 diffuse emission at the studied area, i.e., 17 ± 0.6 t d −1 .

e construction of a small-size, magnetic sector, single focusing mass spectrometer (He-MS) for the continuous, on-site monitoring of He isotope ratios ( 3 He/ 4 He) is described. e instrument is capable of measuring 4 He/ 20 Ne ratios dissolved in several di erent types of natural uids of geochemical interest, such as groundwater and gas from hot springs, volcanoes and gas well elds. e ion optics of He-MS was designed using an ion trajectory simulation program "TRIO," which permits the simultaneous measurement of 3 He and 4 He with a double collector system under a mass resolution power (M/ΔM) of >700. e presently attained speci cations of He-MS are; (1) ). e accuracy and precision of 3 He/ 4 He and 4 He/ 20 Ne ratios were evaluated by comparing the values with those measured using well established noble gas mass spectrometers (modi ed VG5400/MS-III and -IV) in our laboratory, and were found to be in good agreement within analytical errors. Usefulness of the selective extraction of He from water/gas using a high permeability of He through a silica glass wall at high temperature (700°C) is demonstrated.
