The potential of modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (a solid-phase extraction sorbent), for the simultaneous separation and preconcentration of lead, cadmium and nickel; has been investigated. Lead, cadmium and nickel, were adsorbed quantitatively; on modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (in the pH range of 2–4). Parameters influencing, the simultaneous preconcentration of Pb(II), Ni(II) and Cd(II) ions (such as pH of the sample, sample and eluent flow rate, type and volume of elution solution and interfering ions), have been examined and optimized. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the detection limits of this method. for Pb(II), Ni(II) and Cd(II) ions, were 0.32, 0.17 and 0.04 ng mL−1 in original solution, respectively. Seven replicate determinations, of a mixture of 2.0 μg mL−1 lead and nickel, and 1.0 μg mL−1 cadmium; gave a mean absorbance of 0.074, 0.151 and 0.310, with relative standard deviation 1.7%, 1.5% and 1.2%, respectively. The method has been applied, to the determination of trace amounts of lead, cadmium and nickel; in biological and water samples, with satisfactory results.

A silica-gel chemically modified with ethyl-2-benzothiazolylacetate (SiB) has been synthesized and characterized. The extractions towards Pb(II), Cu(II), Co(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) were carried out in batch extraction. The maximum extraction was found at pH > 4 within 10 min. The maximum adsorption capacities, evaluated from Langmuir's model were 221, 141, 13, 7 and 5 µmol g -1 for Pb(II), Cu(II), Co(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II), respectively. Home-made mini-columns were used in the flow system. The parameters that affected the extraction efficiency were explored. Sample volumes of 100.0 mL and 1% HNO3 of 5.0 mL as the eluent were employed under the optimized conditions. No interfering from Na + , K + , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+, Cl -and SO4 2-was observed. This modified silica gel was applied to preconcentrate Pb(II) and Cu(II) from spiked pond water, tap water and drinking water, giving high accuracy and precision. The method detection limits obtained from the desorbed metals determined by FAAS after preconcentration with SiB were 22 and 1 µg L -1 for Pb(II) and Cu(II), respectively.

In this study, highly selective and efficient adsorbent, isonitrosoacetophenone anthranoylhydrazone modified silica gel, was prepared and applied for separation and preconcentration of Cu 2+ ion in water samples. Cu 2+ ion and other metal ions were determined by Inductively Coupled Plazma Optical Emission Spectrometry. The influences of analytical parameters including pH, amount of adsorbent, sample volume, eluent volume, type of eluent etc. on the quantitative recovery of Cu 2+ were investigated. The effects of some alkaline, alkaline earth, some metal ions and anions on the recoveries of Cu 2+ were also examined. Optimum pH value for the adsorption of Cu 2+ was pH 5. 2 mL of 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution for Cu 2+ was found to be satisfactory for the quantitative elution. Limit of detection and limit of quantitation was calculated as 0.265 μg L -1 and 0.803 μg L -1 for Cu 2+ respectively. It was observed that adsorption behaviour of Cu 2+ ions was fitted to the Langmiur adsorption isotherm better than the Freundlich isotherm. In order to validate the accuracy of the method for determination of Cu 2+ ion, certified reference material (ground water-BCR 610) was used. The determined values were in good agreement with the certified values. Proposed separation and preconcentration method was applied to spring, tap and sea water samples. The recoveries of Cu 2+ added to water samples were in between 82-93%.
