Highly selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol over Pt nanoparticles supported on g-C3N4 nanosheets catalysts in water

Abstract: Graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets were investigated for developing effective Pt catalyst supports for selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol in water. The nanosheets with an average thickness of about 3 nm were synthesized by a simple and green method through thermal oxidation etching of bulk g-C3N4 in air. Combined with the unique feature of nitrogen richness and locally conjugated structure, the g-C3N4 nanosheets with a high surface area of 142 m2 g−1 were demonstrated to be an excellent s… Show more

“…4e) by using two synthetic peaks positioned at BE = 795.0 and 797.3 eV (Co 3+ and Co 2+ , respectively). Figure 1c shows type IV N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms of the Co 3 O 4 -CDots-C 3 N 4 with a H3-type hysteresis loop 35 , indicating the formation of a porous structure (the pore-size distribution was derived from the isotherms; for more details, see Supplementary Methods) is presented in Fig. 1c inset; specific surface area ~160 m 2 /g).…”

“…Therefore, attention has been paid to the efficient and stable VLD photocatalysts with metal-free exposed surfaces because of their improved biosafety89. Recently, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ), a typical layered-stacked metal-free polymer semiconductor with a narrow band gap of 2.7 eV, has attracted intensive attention for its promising applications as a VLD photocatalyst owing to its advantages such as low cost, nontoxicity and stability within PH 0–141011. Unfortunately, the overall photocatalytic efficiency of pure g-C 3 N 4 is limited by its low nonlocalized conductivity, high recombination rate and small specific surface area1213.…”

“…The Pt4f spectra in Figure S13 show signals from Pt 0 (72.6 and 75.7 eV) and Pt 2+ (74.9 and 77.7 eV). Interestingly, these values are somewhat higher compared with literature values for surfaces of bulk samples (71.1 and 74.4 eV for Pt 0 ; 72.4 and 76.0 eV for Pt 2+ ) [38]. This may be due to the very small particle size (evidenced also by TEM) [39][40][41][42].…”
