A new method has been developed for the synthesis of a cage-like sulfuryl-bridged triazinane molecule HEXS by acidic condensation of a glycoluril analog with (HCHO) n , having the advantages of avoiding toxic intermediate and achieving a relatively high yield of 64%. The measurements of thermodynamic quantities of the interactions of HEXS with a series of anions by isothermal titration calorimetry indicate that HEXS binds selectively toward SO 4 2− with a high binding constant K a = 1.2 × 10 6 M −1 . Further X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis reveals that HEXS binds to SO 4 2− through multiple C-H•••O hydrogen bonding interactions.
