“…Long‐chain diethanolamine derivative 11 was synthesized in four steps including the reaction of 2‐aminoethanol ( 7 ) with 2‐(2‐chloroethoxy)ethanol ( 8 ) followed by NH ‐group protection/deprotection and OH ‐group acylation of diol 9 (Scheme 1, line c, 29 % overall yield). BODIPY 12 was prepared according to a published procedure by the condensation of kryptopyrrole with chloroacetyl chloride to form dipyrromethene followed by complexation with BF 3 ⋅ OEt 2 in the presence of triethylamine [11e] . “…In our recent works we have reported several substitution strategies at the BODIPY core that ultimately allow photochemical and spectral tuning of dyes [11] . Amongst other things we have demonstrated that BODIPYs bearing pendant polyamines and amino alcohols are promising as viscosity sensors [11a,f] and Zn(II)‐selective probes for imaging in plants roots [11e] .
