“…The pK a of the substrate is locally increased, the overall host acting as an ''acid substitute''. The groups of Divakar, 220 Rao, [221][222][223][224] Nageswar, [225][226][227][228][229] and Kaboudin 230 showed that a stoichiometric amount of non-modified b-cyclodextrin strongly accelerates numerous bimolecular reactions in water.…”

“…Cyclodextrins are a family of cyclic oligosaccharides and they could catalyze many chemical reactions similar to their biocatalyst counterparts (enzymes). The presence of hydrophobic cavities in cyclodextrins is responsible for the reversible formation of the host‐guest complex with substrates resulting in a process known as supramolecular catalysis . Rao and co‐workers reported the synthesis of highly valuable synthons, α‐hydroxyketones and α‐aminoketones 32 directly from easily accessible epoxides and aziridines 31 respectively in the presence of β ‐cyclodextrin ( β ‐CD) and IBX in water (Scheme ) .…”

“…Using this approach, Surendra and co‐workers developed an efficient procedure for the anti ‐Markovnikov addition of thiols with a variety of alkenes in the presence of aerial oxygen using β ‐cyclodextrin ( β ‐CD) in water under neutral conditions (Scheme ). We already have discussed the use of β ‐CD to prepare β ‐hydroxy sulfides from epoxides . The supramolecular catalysis of cyclodextrin occurs in its hydrophobic cavities.…”
