Highly Ordered Mesoporous Organosilica Hybrid Materials

Abstract: The latest developments in periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMO) have been compiled. The discovery of mesoporous hybrid organosilicas with molecular scale periodicity resulting from alternating hydrophilic and hydrophobic layers, and a cost effective solution showing the use of allyl derivatives of the bis-silyl precursors are discussed. Relevant uses of the periodic mesoporous materials in diverse applications are summarized. For example, the metal-incorporated periodic mesoporous organic frameworks are lik… Show more

“…Incorporating metals in the functionalized organosilica framework provides many opportunities for accelerating the catalytic reactions by enhancing the physical and chemical properties of guest molecules and clusters. 230 A large number of mesoporous organosilicas with several organic bridging groups, such as aliphatic, aromatic, and metal complexes, have been synthesized in various forms (e.g., powders, thin films, and monoliths, including self-standing films). 231 Mesoporous organosilica films can be synthesized by either hydrothermal or solvent-evaporation methods.…”

“…In particular, the framework composition that governs the properties of mesoporous materials has been studied most extensively. Mesoporous materials now include a variety of framework compositions, such as metal oxides, 9)11) carbon compounds, 12)14) inorganicorganic hybrid materials, 15), 16) and metals. 17) Recently, mesoporous transition-metal oxides have attracted much interest in a wide range of applications due to their unique chemical and physical properties, such as high surface area, controlled pore size and narrow distribution of pore size.…”

“…However, such organically functionalized mesoporous silica has unsatisfactory properties because organic moieties cannot be distributed homogeneously on silicate surfaces. In contrast, organic fragments are dispersed homogeneously in periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) [17][18][19][20][21][22]. PMO with embedded organic groups is prepared through the hydrolysis and condensation of bridged silsesquioxanes, such as (R O) 3 Si-R-Si(OR ) 3 (R, R ; organic group).…”

Problems in the reduction of mesostructural ordering have been addressed by further design of organic groups with large molecular sizes and/or with an increase in organic content [21,22].…”
