Highly Nonlinear Balanced S-Boxes With Good Differential Properties

Abstract: Substitution boxes (S-boxes) play a central role in the modern design of iterative block ciphers. While in substitution-permutation networks (SPN) the S-boxes are bijective, thus ensuring the invertibility of the encryption algorithm, the property of being bijective is not mandatory for Feistel kind of networks. In this article, two methods of constructing highly nonlinear balanced S-boxes (whose nonlinearity > 2 n−1 − 2 n/2 is better than the nonlinearity of the commonly used inverse S-box) with good algebrai… Show more

“…Designing powerful S-boxes is an important critereon for realisation of secure cryptosystems and it is a major component of nonlinear transformations, which are the fulcrum of confusion and diffusion analysis for assessing well-designed ciphers 41 . Therefore, designing S-boxes based on secure mechanisms plays an important part in modern cryptographic tasks 42,43 . Consequently, it is widely investigated.…”

“…, f m } is a basis of an mdimensional vector space of bent functions over F 2 . Classical examples of vectorial bent functions arise from the Maiorana-McFarland class and the partial spread class, see for instance [2,9,15]. As already shown by Nyberg in [9, Theorem 3.2], for a vectorial Boolean bent function m can be at most n/2.…”

“…For instance, the best affine approximation attack [3] and linear approximation attack [4] both reflect the importance of designing highly nonlinear Sboxes. The construction of resilient S-boxes with high nonlinearity has been an important challenge in cryptography since mid 1990s, and it was extensively studied in [6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13].…”
