A novel highly miniaturized triple band antenna for WiMAX and WLAN applications is presented in this letter. The proposed design has an active patch area of only 108 mm2 (9 × 12 mm2), and operates at 2.5 (lower WiMAX), 3.47 (middle WiMAX) and 5.75 GHz (WLAN), respectively. Miniaturization in the proposed design is accomplished by etching 2 novel cascaded E‐type unit cell defected ground structure in conjunction with the F‐shaped slot, and multiband operations are achieved by etching U and H‐type slots in the radiating monopole. The miniaturization process leads to the reduction of about 82.4% and 73.5% in the active patch area and volume of the proposed antenna respectively, as compared with the conventional designed triple band antenna. The antenna has a compact volume of 0.15 λ0 × 0.15 λ0 × 0.01 λ0 at a lower resonance of 2.6 GHz. The proposed structure has S11<–10 dB bandwidth of about 6.45% (2.55–2.72 GHz), 3.03% (3.25–3.35 GHz) and 5.9% (5.75–6.1 GHz) in simulation, and about 4.2% (2.51–2.62 GHz), 2.31% (3.42–3.50 GHz), and 4.81% (5.68–5.96 GHz) under measurement, respectively. Stable radiation characteristics and good impedance matching are observed across the operational bandwidth of the proposed design.

In this article, miniaturization of dual‐band slot antenna design for GPS, WLAN and amateur radio applications is presented. The proposed dual‐band miniaturized antenna is achieved using slits, rectangular split ring and metallic strips fed by 50 Ω microstrip feed. The first resonant frequency is achieved by loading reference antenna with eight slits that is antenna 1 and the second resonant frequency is achieved by loading with one center slits and rectangular split ring that is antenna 2. Dual‐band antenna is achieved by loading reference slot antenna with nine slits and rectangular split ring which resonates at frequency of 1.52 and 3.03 GHz respectively. As a result, it is achieved 53.79% reduction in first band resonant frequency with 76.07% improvement in −10 dB bandwidth and 7.90% reduction in second band resonant frequency compared to reference slot antenna. Further, this dual‐band antenna is miniaturized by metallic strips which are placed on the bottom of the substrate. This results in 61.39% reduction in first band resonant frequency with 32.07% improvement in −10 dB bandwidth and 26.13% reduction in second band resonant frequency in comparison with reference slot antenna topology.

In this article, a new design of a compact printed rectangular antenna for wireless local area network (WLAN) applications in 802.11a is investigated. The defected ground structure (DGS) technique is successfully used to reduce the ground plane by cutting a large slot to achieve significant miniaturization. The ground plane structure consists of inverted ‘L’ shape. The rectangular radiating element has a size of 6 × 5 mm2 and is connected to a microstrip transmission feed line. The simulated and measured resonance frequency of the single‐band antenna is approximately 5.8 GHz and may cover an impedance bandwidth of 1 GHz for the measurement and 1.65 GHz for the simulation. The simulated and the measured data are in good agreement. The proposed antenna is very compact (10 × 6 mm2) and its impedance bandwidth is suitable for the 5.2‐5.8 GHz WLAN communication systems.
