Highly effective synthesis and photoluminescence of Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+ red-emitting phosphor for LEDs

Abstract: We developed a highly effective and self-sustaining route for synthesizing Sr(2)Si(5)N(8):Eu(2+) red-emitting phosphor particles for use in light emitting diodes (LEDs). The phosphors thus synthesized showed excellent emission characteristics under a blue excitation wavelength of 450 nm, had a uniform particle size distribution, and showed high performance in LED packages.

“…Alternatively, red phosphors ranging from sulfides, silicates to nitrides were widely employed in fabricating white LEDs to compensate red component, especially for those well-known nitrides red phosphors with high luminous efficiency and outstanding thermal stability, such as (Ca, Sr, Ba) 2 Si 5 N 8 :Eu 2? [4,5], (Ca, Sr)AlSiN 3 :Eu 2? [6,7] and (Ca, Sr) LiAl 3 N 4 :Eu 2?…”

“…yellow emitting phosphor was reported by Zhang et al [17] with carbothermal route using SrCO 3 and CeO 2 as raw materials. Comparing with other synthetic routes (such as, solid-state reaction, ammonothermal method and combustion technique) [4,18,19], carbothermal synthesis was identified as a facile route for preparation of nitrides phosphors by considering of its outstanding advantages in relative low reaction temperature (1400-1600°C), cheap raw materials (oxides or carbonates, SrCO 3 , CaCO 3 , Eu 2 O 3 ) and simple processing [20][21][22]. As one of significant nitride phosphor, CaAlSiN 3 :Eu 2?…”

“…Presently, the red phosphor for white LEDs can be excited by near ultraviolet (NUV) or blue chips [5,6]. However, the current red phosphors of sulfides and phosphates suffer from poor efficiency and chemical stability, or need strict synthesis conditions [7].…”

“…Nitridosilicate‐based M 2 Si 5 N 8 :Eu 2+ (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) phosphors are considered to be the significant for white LEDs as red‐light emitting materials with low thermal quenching owing to the strong crystal fields and covalent nature . However, the emission color can be tuned from red to yellow after codoping of Ce 3+ ions in Sr 2 Si 5 N 8 : Eu 2+ host based on the concept of energy transfer . The combination of such kind of phosphors with blue LED chips is possible to produce white light.…”
