Highly Crystalline, Idiomorphic Na2Ti6O13 Whiskers Grown from a NaCl Flux at a Relatively Low Temperature

Abstract: Well-developed, highly crystalline Na 2 Ti 6 O 13 whiskers were successfully grown by cooling a NaCl flux at a relatively low temperature of 700°C. The obtained Na 2 Ti 6 O 13 whiskers were colorless and transparent. The whiskers grown at 700°C were single phase and exhibit the lowest sizes of up to about 3.5 µm ϫ 0.1 µm. From the results of SEM, XRD, and TEM, it was confirmed that the Na 2 Ti 6 O 13 whiskers have

“…5a, Na 2 Ti 6 O 13 and Li 2 Ti 6 O 13 nanobelts all show strong absorption in the ultraviolet region and the shapes of two spectra are also similar. The onset of the spectrum recorded from Na 2 Ti 6 O 13 sample is about 360 nm corresponding to a band gap of 3.45 eV, which is very close to the value of Na 2 Ti 6 O 13 whiskers and nanobelts (3.4 eV) [3,6]. Li 2 Ti 6 O 13 nanobelts present the onset wavelength of absorption at around 370 nm.…”

“…We have successfully expanded this process to the synthesis of Li 2 Ti 6 O 13 nanobelts. The precursor Na 2 Ti 6 O 13 nanobelts were first prepared by the molten salt synthesis method, which is similar to previous reports [3,4,6,7]. In a typical procedure of synthesizing Na 2 Ti 6 O 13 nanobelts, 1 mmol Na 2-CO 3 and 6 mmol TiO 2 were mixed with 5.0 g NaCl, ground homogeneously in a mortar for 30 min.…”

“…The flux growth method has been extensively investigated and has been shown to provide fine single crystals of small size, depending on the synthesis conditions. In recent years, this method has been applied for the preparation of inorganic crystals as photocatalysts, such as TiO 2 [9], Na 2 Ti 6 O 13 [10], K 2 Ti 6 O 13 [11], and so on. Many fluxes, such as K 2 MoO 4 , Li 2 O-K 2 MoO 4 , K 2 O-MoO 3 , K 2 O-WO 3 , PbO, Bi 2 O 3 , K 2 CO 3 -K 4 P 2 O 7 , K 2 CO 3 -V 2 O 5 , PbO-K 4 P 2 O 7 and KCl-KF have been used.…”
