Highly Conducting and Strongly Adhering Polypyrrole Coating Layers Deposited on Glass Substrates by a Chemical Process

Abstract: To improve adhesion between polypyrrole and glass, new pyrrole-substituted organotrialkoxysilanes coupling agents are synthesized and studied. Solubility, hydrolysis, and selfcondensation features in aqueous solutions are investigated by IR, 1 H, and 29 Si NMR spectroscopies. Varying the experimental conditions of pyrrole chemical polymerization on glass fibers surfaces indicates that a preliminary substrate treatment with these coupling agents and the use of a chemical vapor deposition process jointly lead to… Show more

“…Among the selfassembling techniques, silanization has been widely used for the modification of inorganic surfaces such as silicon or glass. Some attempts to generate a self-assembly monolayer by using a long, sometimes branched, alkoxysilane chain containing an aniline or a pyrrole group, followed by the physical, chemical, or electrochemical deposition of a conductive polymer have been made (19)(20)(21)(22). These organosilane derivatives presented, however, shortcomings in the formation of SAMs, such as incomplete coverages and even difficulties in preparation and purification (23,24).…”

“…However, the poor adhesion force between the PPy film and substrate material seriously inhibit its further application [3]. Although lots of significant progress has been made to improve its adhesion problem, there still has the desire to find a mild and effective method [4,5].…”

“…8 Up to now, several studies reported on using pyrrole-functionalized organosilanes to increase the adhesion of the polymers to the substrate. For example, 3-(pyrrol-1-yl) propyl trimethoxylsilane was successfully used by Simon et al 9 and Wu et al 10 for adhering PPy on silicon substrate; Cossement obtained dense and adhesive PPy films by grafting polypyrrole on the 6-(pyrrol-1-yl)-n-hexyl trichlorosilane modified ITO electrode; 11 Guiseppi-Elie et al 5 and Faverolle et al 12 used other pyrrole-substituted organosilane monolayers for grafting PPy on SiO 2 substrates; Shustak et al 13 used n-alkanoic acid monolayer to promote the adhesion of polypyrrole on stainless steel. However, all above mentioned adhesion promoters are 1-substituted pyrrole organosilane.…”
